Originally built in 1932, the Hotel Atlantide's unverified claim to fame is that it was the first hotel built in West Africa.  What is not open for debate is that the Atlantide has been welcoming desert and river travelers for a long time and that it sits right in the middle of the action - situated right next to the lively, daily Gao market and just 100-yards or so from the Niger River.  As of May 2006, Atlantide ownership was improving the property with a fresh coat of exterior paint...of course, there's really no way to know how many layers have already been applied in the last 74 years.
