Djenn� - The Largest Mud Brick Building in the World
The mud mosque at Djenn� is
quite simply unforgettable. It is the largest mud-brick building in
the world and a stunning wonder to be seen. Built in the Sudanic-style,
this exact mud mosque dates from the early 20th-century, although the site
held a similar older mosque before this one.
Lucky visitors may be able to visit during the annual "re-mudding" of the mosque. As can be imagined, mud washes away during the rainy season, so every year the entire town comes together to re-mud the mosque. Check with the OMATHO-Mopti bureau or with tour operators for details. The "remudding" depends on annual water levels but generally occurs somewhere between February and April every year.
Mopti / Sevar� is the easiest jumping off point to visit Djenn�. It is quite easy to rent a 4x4 in either of these towns for a day-trip to Djenn�. For the budget-oriented travelers, public transportation to Djenn� is a bit sparse, except on Mondays, which is Djenn�'s normal market day. Pick up a "neuf-place" Peugeot from Mopti to Djenn� on Mondays and return the same day.
A visit to see this wonderful mosque will certainly be a highlight of your Malian vacation.
