Mopti - The Cross-Roads of Mali, Great Jumping off Spot for Dogon, Gao,
Timbuktu, Djenn�
Mopti is a beautiful river
city built at the confluence of the Bani and Niger Rivers.
Many Timbuktu-bound Niger River trips depart from the river banks in Mopti.
There are some wonderful river walks in Mopti. Heading north, there is a large number of huge trees along the road with women washing their clothes on the banks of the river. It's a wonderful scene. Or, go the other way and you can see the Sudanic-style, recently renovated Mopti Mosque or pass through one of the biggest fish markets in all of Mali.
Mopti is also just a great place to relax with several highly regarded tourist quality hotels, like the Hotel Kanagh. Because Mopti is also so centrally located between Dogon Country, Timbuktu, Gao, the Niger River, Lac D�bo, and Djenn� it's a great place to find a guide and arrange all of your Malian adventures. There are also multiple travel agencies that keep offices in either Mopti or Sevar�
Sevar�, where the closest airport is located, is only about 15 Km from Mopti and also has some nice lodging options.
