Awesome, hand-made jewelry is found in abundance at the Gao Maison des Artisans

With over 50 artisan shops and work going on in every corner of the building, the Maison des Artisans is a must-see for anyone visiting Gao.  Throughout most countries in West Africa, travelers will find Tuareg silver jewelry and leather boxes.  In Gao, you can actually sit and watch the artisans create these unique pieces.  In fact, you will be amazed when you see the beautiful items that are produced with the most basic tools imaginable.  The artisans love discussing their craft, so if you want to do more than look and bargain, spend some time watching them work.  You'll see their products at all stages of production.

Leather goods make great gifts

The artisans of Gao have three areas of specialty.  First, there are the leather goods including traditional Tamashek pillows (pictured above) and decorative leather boxes of all shapes and sizes (pictured below).  Then, there is the beautiful metalwork, including many types of jewelry (pictured above), swords (pictured below), knives and bottle openers.  Third, Gao is known for producing well-crafted leather shoes (flat and broad for walking on the desert sands) preferred by many Malians.

Decorative leather boxes are a popular item with tourists
