The Museum of the Sahel was Mali's second museum after the National Museum in Bamako. This well-presented museum is perfect for learning about the art, culture, history, and people of Gao. Visitors learn about the Songhaï, the people of the river, as well as the Tamashek (Tuareg), the people of the desert and once referred to as the "blue people".
The museum has artifacts collected from local archeological sites, like Sanèye, the site of the ancient Songhaï kingdom and the Mosque of Kankou Moussa. Other features include replicas of the traditional Songhï and Tamashek tents as well as the tools of everyday life. Visitors will be pleased to find many examples of the colorful decorations that these two distinct peoples use in social celebrations and also everyday life. For visitor convenience, most signs in the musuem are presented in both English and French.
